Report by Owen Harries
With five runners in both the mens and womens categories Team Southampton had an even split in last Sundays Alton 10 mile road race.
The course uses mainly small country roads and lanes to the north east of Alton, very little of the course is flat and there are a number of both
short sharp and also longer steady hills to be tackled. The general feeling after the race was that the hills were not as bad as expected but
perhaps this was also due in some part to the tales being told by some members of the party during the journey up to the start. It was later
admitted that the difficulty faced in previous years had also perhaps been due to alcohol consumption the night before and 26 deg temperatures.
Weather conditions for this years event were much more favourable with light winds and cool temperature. The large field soon spread out as the
runners made their way out of Alton onto the scenic course. At this point the author must admit to not actually competing in the event, myself Trevor Gregory
and James Allen had taken the option of a cycle ride out to support the runners. After a degree of faffing around and then a high speed blast up to
Alton (speeds of 45mph were hit on one of the descents) we arrived at the start to see the field depart and turn left onto the road we had expected them
to turn right onto. We thus missed the first opportunity to cheer and had to follow the back of the pack until we could cut across the course to pick them
up at the 7 mile point.
Leading the race and eventual winner Mark le-Gassick of Stubbington Green already had a healthy lead by the time we saw him. First of our runners through
was Emyr followed shortly afterwards by Sally. Next but later than expected was Hannah. The reason for this was explained when Becky passed, a fellow competitor
had collapsed on the course with breathing difficulties and both Hannah, Becky and a runner from Hardley had compromised their races to give assistance.
After re-locating to the finish the support group met up with the early finishers and cheered home the rest of the Team Southampton runners. Some even had
the energy for a sprint finish. To celebrate the run and in order to replenish energy stores most of the group then decided to test out the coffee and cake shops
of Alton. (chocolate fudge cake probably the best option).
Photos to follow soon - check back later.
