Sunday morning and those doing the Reading half marathon have had to set their alarms to silly o'clock in order
to get to the start on time. With the clocks also changing overnight there was slight confusion for one of our
group who managed to get up even earlier than planned (something about the time adjusting automatically on the alarm….).
On arrival in Reading the temperatures had reached a whole 2 deg but at least the sun was shining and the temperatures
were forecast to rise by the start time. With an entry of 12,000 runners the start area around the Majadski stadium was
teeming with runners. After the inevitable queue for the loo and to drop bags off we just about make it to the start line
on time.
With chip timing and each start pen going off at minute intervals conjestion in the early miles was kept
to a minimum. A long hill around 3 to 4 miles also managed to spread the field out and raise the heart rate.
Marshalling and public support out on the course was excellent with the offical water stops supplemented by a pub organised
beer stop (just before the second signuificant hill) and a Jelly Baby stop around 9 miles. The last few miles out of the
town to the stadium were either a slog along the dual carriageway or opportunity to take a few more places depending on
how much energy was left in the tank.
All of the runners however enjoyed the stadium finish with the stands full of supporters.
One pb was set on the day (or maybe 2 if you count Petes "Passed Becky") and all Team Southampton runners were pleased with their times, special mention goes to
Phil Costello a recent member of the club making his debut at half marathon distance. In fact this was the first time
he had run over 8 miles.
