Race Report
Another sunny and dry running for this years Combe Gibbet to Overton race. Despite talk of muddy sections in the early miles the
conditions underfoot were mostly dry with good grip. Perhaps it was the start under the Gibbet (hanging post) but the race started with
the usual cavalary charge downhill. It didnt take long for the runners to find their own pace however and settle down to the task ahead.
If you could drag your eyes away from picking a good line then the reward was stunning views over the valleys below. At one point I found myself
looking down on a pair of red kites soaring on the thermals (perhaps waiting to pick off a tired runner). At around 9 miles the real work kicked
in with a climb up Watership Down. Even at the top there was no respite with a strong headwind making the running hard.
The race ends with a fast downhill section into the finish funnel on the sports field. From there its a short walk to the school hall where
energy replenishment cakes are available. Thanks to Overton Harriers for putting on another good event and the marshals and helpers for the
cheerful support & encouragement.
