Abdi Mahamed & Ben Brown win races on first day of Great South run festival

Yesterday saw the hors d’oeuvre before today’s main Great South run event with the 5K race and the Junior races all taking place along the seafront in Southsea.The 5K race went off first and resulted in a win for Abdi Mahamed who took the race in 15 mins 52 secs.  Peter Merritt was 11th in 17 mins 17 secs.

The 2.5K junior races are split into 2 age groups with those from 9-11 running in 1 wave and those from 12-15 in another.  In the boys 9-11 race, Ben Brown comfortably won in an impressive 8 mins 10 secs and as Ben is only 10, he can come back again in the same age group next year.  Alongside him on the podium was good friend and training partner Theo Abbt who finished 3rd.  Felix Clacy was 8th, George Lambert 14th and Nicholas Dempsey 83rd.

In the girls 9-11 age group, Megan Hulbert just missed out on the podium in 4th place but again will be back in the same age group next year, hollie Roberts was 25th and Olivia Burgess 46th.

In the boys older age group, Ben Williams was 7th, Harry Corker 14th, Barney clacy 15th and Hayden Seaman 18th.

In the girls older age group, Phoebe Moriarty-Palios was 12th and Abigail Warington was 35th.
