The Bournemouth Bay consists of a 1k , 5k , 10k , and half marathon . The 1k and 5k are classed as fun runs by the organisers whilst the longer distances generally attract the more serious runners. Unfortunately this years event highlighted what can go wrong when marshals are not in position.
Although there were no Southampton Athletes in the 10k race there were plenty of local runners participating. The chasing pack went through the first 1k in approximately 3min 44 (writer in position) and yet the winner of the race finished in over 48 minutes! The lack of a marshal in a critical position led to many of the runners missing a turning and Rob Kelly (Lordshill Road Runners) recorded an 8.5m run on his Garmin at the finish. As things stand runners enter races with the understanding that the organisers can cancel a race without any redress however in the case where an organiser admits they are to blame (see results , Power Of Ten ‘BHF Bournemouth Bay 10K – Not being included due to marshalling error’) hopefully things will turn out differently.
The Bournemouth Bay Half was run over an extremely hard course owing to modifications due to building works in the Pier Approach runners having to combat a strong headwind during the last four miles or so along the seafront from Southbourne to the finish. Again the lack of marshalling at a junction meant that the lead runner (Rich) was relegated to seventh for a time and had to work hard to get back into contention. Congratulations to Rich as this was his first major victory in a Southampton vest and particularly impressive as a day earlier he was competing in the relays at Sutton Coldfield.
Emyr too ran an excellent race 18 /1168 says it all.
