Conversion of the club into a Registered Charity

On 29 August 2014 the Charity Commission granted full charity status to the club and at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on the 30 September 2014 the membership unanimously agreed to convert into a registered charity with the name “Southampton Athletic Club CIO”.

In order for the club to become a charity, it had to satisfy to the Charity Commission that it could meet the definition of a Charity as detailed under the Charities Act 2012. Essentially, the club had to show that its activities and objectives provided a public benefit to the people of Southampton and surrounding areas. For a number of reasons, the club was able to meet this requirement and to support the application we were able to highlight the club’s outstanding reputation for providing athletics and athletic related activities to all age groups and abilities in the Southampton area.

The club’s registered charity number is 1158398


As part of the application process to become a charity it was required to rewrite the governing document or constitution in order to comply with the Charities Commission’s requirements. The constitution can be found above. The committee are in the process of rewriting the bylaws of the club to cover matters that are not included within the constitution. These bylaws will cover diverse matters ranging from the club colours to the conduct of committee meetings and the bylaws will also be made available on the website as soon as they are finalised.

Advantages of being a registered charity

The decision to convert to a registered charity is an important one for the club and charity status will bring many benefits including,

  • Assisting with fundraising activities to realise the committee’s vision of improving the athletic facilities available to the people of Southampton
  • Raising the status of the club in the local community
  • The financial benefit of being able to claim gift relief on charitable donations.

Donations and Gift Relief

If any one wishes to make a charitable donation to the club then please use the form provided. This will enable the club to claim gift relief from HMRC and therefore increases the value of any donation to the club by 25%.

Charitable donations and membership subscriptions

Please note that the Club cannot reclaim gift relief on membership subscriptions. Any charitable donations must be made in addition to your membership subscriptions and made using the HMRC form above for the Club to be able to claim gift relief on the donation.

All donations will be acknowledged by the Committee and you should only claim gift relief on your personal tax return if you receive this acknowledgement.
