The Eastleigh 10K took place in fairly benign conditions although a breeze made it hard during the latter stages of the race along Chestnut Avenue. At the top end Joshua Grace duly completed victory but in a comparatively slow time. Adam Hickey the previous years winner recorded a time a full two minutes quicker (2016) despite the two athletes having similar 10k personal bests , Hickeys slightly better. Alex Wall Clarke looked to have secured second place but was eventually beaten narrowly and pushed into 3rd. Abdi Mahammed and Ben Brewster both gained personal bests with the latter finishing second Southampton man.
Congratulations to Paul Harvey who made it his personal mission to get below fifty a feat he last achieved in 2014 making it by a whisker and commiserations to Kim Batten who would have been delighted to see he had finished high in age category , less delighted to see he was now categorized as ‘a lady’. His correct result is still to appear. In the ladies race Jen Elkins ran a time that would have won the majority of local league races , however she came up against the well known and formidable athlete Kate Maltby who triumphed . It was good to see Rachael Ayerst back to close to her personal best and Nicci Blandfords run of fine form continuing. There seems to be a very good core of athletes running just below the elite ladies times that is a major factor in our resurgence in road running. When we (hopefully) get promoted seasons end , next year in Division 1 it will be time to end Winchesters 10 years (plus) of dominance!
