The weather held for our first Open Meeting of 2018 and it was great to see so many athletes of all ages and abilities competing. There were some great battles both on the track and field with some athletes running, jumping or throwing for the first time this year. Over 40 Quad Kids kicked the meeting off with a 75m sprint followed by long jump, vortex throw and a 600m run. Harley Taylor was particularly impressive in the boys Year 5 category leading the event from start to finish and winning the event by a fantastic 28 points.
Despite the windy conditions, we saw some good races in the 100m events with a few personal bests. With the distances rarely raced, the 300m and 600m events are always popular as a season opener as middle distance, 200m and 400m runners combine. We were not disappointed with some great clashes over 600m where speed, speed endurance and endurance based runners showed their competitive edge. Despite just missing the 600m British record, Jon Tilt (European indoor M55 400m silver medallist) showed he is in good shape as he battled to the line with 800m specialist, David Blackman. The final event of the evening was the 1500m with a fantastic 52 athletes competing.
On the field, there were also some notable performances including Jeremiah Nampuma in the long jump (6.86m) and a sparking PB for Talia Jones (3.85m). Following more heavy rainfall, the javelin runway resurfacing could not be completed in time but this did not deter our throwers. SAC’s Bradley Jenvey, who is first year U17 (so a new weight of javelin) threw a massive 51.75m which puts him Top 5 in the UK rankings for 2018. In the shot, the younger throwers also impressed with another PB for multi-eventer, Travis Scottow.
