Southern Cross Country Championships

The Southern Cross Country championships when all the top athletes compete annually took place on the 28th of January at the home of cross-country running Parliament Hill Fields which is part of Hampstead Heath in London.

Conditions were good and the usual mud associated with this race was in the main absent. Despite this the course is very demanding with some tough hills. Southampton Athletic Club fielded athletes in all age groups from Under 13’s to Seniors. Zakariya Mahamed just snatched victory in the under 17 age group after a thrilling battle with Portsmouth’s Lachlan Wellington who coming into the finishing strait was seemingly assured of victory but a final surge from Zak secured first place by just one second. Both of these athletes have been exchanging victory’s all season with Lachlan finishing ahead in the previous weeks Hampshire School championships.Earlier young Ben Brown in the under 13 race finished an outstanding third. Frances Arnott ran very well to finish 68th in the senior women’s race and Jamie Knapp fresh from 2nd place in the Hampshire County Championships finished in an outstanding 6th place in a quality field.
