The Alton 10 took place on a sunny , warm spring day the course consisting of a fast first half followed by a tough second capped by a one mile climb to the finish. It was an exciting men’s race with a duel between the pre-race first and second placed men in the HRRL series. At the 9 mile mark Ben Saunby (Salisbury) was running on the shoulder of Sebastian Hoenig (Lordshill) but appeared to be the less comfortable with the pace of the two. Sebastian is a professor of Physics and Astronomy at Southampton University whose speciality is supermassive black holes and somewhat appropriately Ben had disappeared by the time Seb had raced around the final corner before re-emerging to cross the finish line some 13 seconds later. The men’s championship could well go to the last race of the season. The ladies race in contrast was easily won by Tasmin Anderson of Winchester , however its good to report that the single Southampton female representative Alice Burch managed a very respectable 4th place .
