The final race of the HRRL season luckily took place in benign conditions following on from the mini-heatwave that was experienced in the lead up to the event. Favourable conditions were the order of the day as the course is testing at the best of times with the second half of the race being renown for sapping the strength of runners finishing with a uphill sprint around the edges of a field. What makes this race locally unique is that each runner is given cress to enjoy post-race.

The first man home Phil Bernstein won the race in 2021 too although eyes were on Ben Saunby and Seb Hoenig who were contenders for the overall HRRL Men’s title. Seb pulled away from Ben during the second half of the race (he likes hills!) to finish second overall and therefore claim the title. The first lady home was Victoria Gill of WADAC and she was followed in by her clubmates Tasmin Anderson who duly claimed the HRRL Lady’s title and Lucy Elliott. Alice Burch ran an excellent race for Southampton and was a mere one second outside her 2022 Stubbington 10k time which is considered a quick course . She also completed all 10 races of the league 2021/22 . Without her presence Southampton would have had no female representation at a number of races.
See you next season!
